Love, Sex, & Intimacy: Working More Effectively with Individuals and Couples

Workshop Description: Both therapists and patients often use the words love, sex, and intimacy interchangeably. Western culture's (and Western psychology's) confusion about this contributes to both relationship and sexual dissatisfaction.

In this fast-paced, challenging seminar, we will examine innovative ways of helping patients communicate about love, sex, and intimacy. We will look at what people say they want from intimate relationships, exactly how they prevent themselves from getting it and why. We will talk frankly about how patients really experience sex. We’ll also look at how therapists sometimes collude with patients? dysfunctional beliefs, decisions, and behavior. Topics covered will include:

-Power dynamics in sexual and intimate relationships
-Diagnosis and treatment of desire discrepancies
-Non-monogamy and other non-traditional forms of sexual expression
-Understanding and influencing clients' sexual functioning and decision-making
-Noticing and challenging clients' assumptions about sexuality & intimacy
-Effective history-taking & home assignments
Sexual aspects of health issues, including aging, illness, & medications
-Why reassuring patients they're "normal" can undermine their growth
-Why existential issues are crucial in therapy; how we collude with clients to avoid dealing with them, and how to help clients resolve them.

Dr. Klein's workshop approved for 20 CE credits approved for licensed Psychologists, California MFTs and LCSWs and for members of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors Therapists (AASECT). Continuing education credit is provided by Alliant International University, an approved provider by the American Psychological Association, the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (provider #PCE234), and the California Board of Registered Nursing (provider #CEP11235). Yet you may need time away from your practice now more than ever. Our goal is to provide you with an affordable way to combine work and pleasure. When you take one of our CE courses, you may be able to write off most or all of your expenses in Italy and airfare (talk to your accountant for details).

Increased Relaxation = Increased Learning and Retention When you're in Italy, it's like being in another world. It's easier to relax and let go. Our classes are designed so that your afternoons are free to wander through the  countryside, take in a winery, have a wonderful meal, or visit a museum. Our participants tell us that learning in this environment, at a more relaxed pace allows them to integrate new material faster and more easily.

Unlike large symposia and conferences, we aim to create an intimate setting where the presenter is available in a less formal way, where colleagues from all over the world feel free to share cases, feedback, and consultation, while at the same time enjoying the delights of Italy.

In June 2009 we are looking forward to enjoying the heart of the Tuscan countryside. The venue is "off the beaten path", 15 minutes by car from downtown Lucca and downtown Pisa, nestled in the Tuscan hills.
